Open Water Diver
The SSI Open Water Diver is the world’s most popular scuba diving certification for beginners.
Once you’ve obtained the Open Water Diver certification, you can:
• Dive with your buddy, independently without a professional, and safely with the confidence that your comprehensive training has provided.
• Rent and buy diving equipment.
• And take part in diving excursions, trips and a variety of diving activities around the world, thanks to the power and recognition of your certification.
The course is divided into three main sections:
• Knowledge development.
• Confine water dives.
• Open water dives.
These basic sections can be done in parallel rather than one after the other, so you start diving the very first day of the course.
With your guide-book you will get training materials which will help you understand the principles of diving theory, equipment and procedures. For example, you learn how pressure affects your body, how to choose the right equipment and what to consider every time you plan a dive.
You will complete Knowledge Development on your own, reading each of the five sections of your book. Then you review what you have learnt from each section with your instructor. At the end of the course, there will be a test to ensure that you understand all the key objectives of the course.
Confine water dives
Your new underwater experiences begin here. You develop basic scuba skills in shallow and confined waters. You will learn everything from how to assemble scuba equipment, how to empty the mask from water without surfacing and practice some emergency procedures. Five such dives, each of which builds on the last, will take place during your course.
Open water dives
With the open water dives you continue your training by making four real dives. This is where you will have fun by applying everything you have learned and experience a full underwater adventure in the open sea, with exercises at the depth of up to 18 metres. A new world will open up to you.
The SSI Open Water Diver course is very flexible and based on your performance, which means that training proceeds according to how much time you have, the instructional methods you prefer and how quickly you learn. This allows you to move at a rate that is comfortable for you. You can complete the confine and open water dives in four days, is you read and study the theory before or during the course. You may also want to carry on with your training and go for the globally recognised certification of SSI Open Water Diver programme. If you chose to do this with Notos Mare Diving Centre, having done the DSD with us, you qualify for a reduction on the course cost.
